Bio-Sandfilters

NEPAL | Water (funded)
Initial position

On April 25, 2015, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 shook Nepal and left it in ruins, followed by numerous aftershocks, some of which were also devastatingly strong, until the end of July. Approximately 8,800 people died, over 22,000 were injured, entire villages were wiped out, and supplies collapsed. The already precarious drinking water supply was exacerbated by the earthquake - numerous wells and springs were destroyed.

Commitment

After the earthquake, employees of our partners were trained in cooperation with a project manager from Thailand and a local NGO in the production of bio-sandfilters to obtain clean drinking water. In the following years, 2,000 filters were produced and distributed to affected families. The project has since been re-launched to produce more bio-sandfilters.

CHALLENGES
Access to clean drinking water is a human right, yet fresh water remains a pipe dream for many Nepalese. The presence of water alone is not enough; drinking quality must be guaranteed.
OBJECTIVES
The long-term safeguarding of drinking water in Nepal. AVC trains local employees in the production of bio-sandfilters. In order to guarantee the drinking water supply in Nepal in the long term, AVC and its partners ensure the continuous production of simple but effective water filters. One such bio-sandfilter supplies a family with up to 80 liters of drinking water per day.
