A War-Stained People

CHECHNYA
Chechnya is part of a country that does not appear in the persecution index. However, the conditions in this Russian republic call for prayer for persecuted Christians.

Chechen society is known beyond its borders for its brutality. Due to the propensity for violence of the people who grew up here, it stands out internationally in armed conflicts. Its political leader has thus earned himself the nickname “Putin's bloodhound” in two senses.

Within its own borders, this aggression is directed against Christians. Several evangelists who came here to preach have disappeared without a trace. Or their remains were publicly displayed as a deterrent.

Even locals who decide to live their lives with Jesus must expect the most severe consequences. Such a decision is perceived as a disgrace to the entire family, which must be eliminated by the father or an older brother.

Officially, Russia allows freedom of religion. Therefore, Christians have founded a publicly registered congregation and built a meeting room on a plot of land purchased for this purpose. Up to 80 people now attend the services. However, there is a great deal of mistrust, and unusual precautions are necessary. Unknown faces are enough to cause people to leave the hall. And sometimes events are canceled altogether because the building is being watched by unfamiliar vehicles.

We pray ...
Pray for protection and courage for Christians,
for the favor of the government for the followers of Jesus,
and for open hearts among people who do not yet know the gospel.
